The Medieval Institute Library is open and available for use by Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff. The Medieval Institute General Collection are open stacks, and can be accessed anytime the Hesburgh Library building is open.

Medieval Institute reference collection materials may be accessed by appointment between 8 am-5pm Monday-Friday.

Due to the nature of university social distancing requirements, seats in these reading rooms are limited to those actually working with the resources, limited to 8 hours/day per patron.

The Medieval Institute Reference Collections include:

  • Medieval Reference (715 Hesburgh Library)
  • Byzantine/Classical Reference (714 Hesburgh Library)
  • Near Eastern Reference (714B Hesburgh Library)
  • Paleography (715Q Hesburgh Library)
  • Gabriel History of Universities (715E Hesburgh Library)
  • Ambrosiana Research Room (715F Hesburgh Library)

To accommodate those who need access to a small number of resources for a longer period of time, most of these collections continue to circulate for a one-week period through the Fall Semester. Materials in the History of Universities Collection and Ambrosiana Research Room must be used in the reading rooms. All items in all reference collections are available for scanning via document delivery, in accordance with copyright restrictions.
